- ChemCare’s 2024 Year in Review: Celebrating 4 Key Milestones and Looking Ahead
As 2024 draws to a close, we want to take a moment to reflect on the achievements and challenges of the past year. At ChemCare, we’re incredibly grateful for the continued support of our customers, suppliers, partners, and dedicated team members who have played a vital role in delivering safe, compliant, and innovative logistics solutions . This year has been one of growth and progress for ChemCare, marked by exciting new initiatives and a continued commitment to hazardous goods compliance. Here’s a closer look at some of the highlights: 1. ChemCare Impact Teams: Building with Collaboration One of our most exciting initiatives this year has been the launch of ChemCare Impact Teams , a program designed to foster collaboration, curiosity, and adaptability within our workforce. Inspired by our CEO Jamie’s decade-long involvement with Collective Intelligence, this initiative aims to create a stronger sense of belonging at ChemCare. The idea began as a conversation between Jamie and Ian Harvey, founder of Collective Intelligence, about bringing the values of collaboration and mutual growth into our organisation. The result is a voluntary program where employees meet in facilitated offsite sessions three times a year, supported by team representatives who encourage ongoing communication and accountability between sessions. The impact has been remarkable: Teams are demonstrating adaptability and confidence. Feedback loops have strengthened internal communication. A greater sense of community has emerged across the company. As we move into 2025, we look forward to expanding and refining this program to drive even greater engagement and teamwork. 2. Introducing CommCare: Expanding Our Offerings In October, we were proud to expand our specialised sub-brands with the launch of CommCare , a new service designed to meet the evolving needs of our customers. CommCare joins our existing brands: AgriCare : Supporting the agricultural sector. FoodCare : Delivering food-grade storage and distribution. PharmaCare : Offering tailored logistics solutions for the pharmaceutical and retail sectors. CommCare represents our commitment to innovation and customer satisfaction, and it’s already delivering significant benefits for our clients: Faster order processing and delivery times. Improved packaging and handling, maintaining the high standards you expect from ChemCare. Enhanced communication and tracking features for greater supply chain visibility. The positive feedback we’ve received has been immensely encouraging. With our dedicated CommCare team we are committed to refining and enhancing the brand and service offering moving forward, ensuring it continues to exceed your expectations. 3. ChemCare Staff Celebration: 20 Years of Excellence In September, we were proud to celebrate a significant milestone—our Compliance Manager, Graeme McElroy, marked 20 years with ChemCare! Graeme joined ChemCare in 2004 as a storeman, and throughout his career, he has contributed to nearly every aspect of our operations. From inwards goods and inventory to health and safety, operations, and compliance, Graeme’s journey reflects his dedication and passion for hazardous goods logistics. With a deep commitment to compliance, particularly in the hazardous goods space, Graeme has helped set the standard for excellence. His unmatched knowledge and skillset have been instrumental in maintaining ChemCare’s reputation as a leader in compliance and safety. Competing professionally, he achieved incredible success: New Zealand National Champion (2006) WDF Asia Pacific Men’s Cup Winner (2006) Auckland Men’s Open Champion (2007) Graeme’s competitive spirit and dedication, which propelled him to the top of his game in darts, are evident in his work at ChemCare. Congratulations, Graeme, on 20 outstanding years and your contributions to ChemCare’s success! 4. Leading in Hazardous Goods Compliance WorkSafe’s heightened focus on hazardous goods compliance has been a key theme this year, with an emphasis on secondary containment and separation distances. These measures are essential for mitigating risks, protecting the environment, and ensuring workplace safety. Key updates include: Secondary Containment Systems : Ensuring bunds and spill containment systems are correctly sized and maintained for the chemicals they store. Segregation and Separation : Maintaining compliant distances between incompatible substances and ensuring separation from protected and public places. At ChemCare, compliance is a cornerstone of our operations. Our facilities are designed to meet WorkSafe standards and enhance operational efficiency. - Unlock the Power of a Specialist 3PL Provider for Hazardous Goods
New Zealand businesses are increasingly turning to third-party logistics (3PL) providers to streamline their supply chains. This is especially true for companies managing the storage , handling, and transportation of dangerous goods (DG), where safety, compliance, and efficiency are paramount. Let's take a closer look at the reasons behind these trends and their benefits to businesses. ChemCare Storage Facilities 01. Safety & Regulatory Compliance: One of the main advantages of using a dedicated 3PL provider for DG operations is safety and compliance. Regulations governing the storage, handling, and transportation of dangerous goods are becoming more and more stringent. With a continued and more proactive focus from the regulator (Worksafe), businesses need to ensure their operations adhere to the regulations. In New Zealand, WorkSafe oversees hazardous goods regulations. In 2017, the Health & Safety at Work (Hazardous Substances) Regulations 2017 were introduced. These regulations outline the requirements that must be in place for businesses that handle hazardous substances. The regulations also mandate businesses to have inventory and safety data sheets for all hazardous substances they handle. A hazardous substances management plan is also needed, outlining the measures taken to manage the risks associated with hazardous substances. Additionally, for Major Hazard Facilities, the Health and Safety at Work (Major Hazard Facilities ) Regulations 2016 apply. WorkSafe’s compliance focus also includes ensuring appropriate secondary containment systems and maintaining separation distances for hazardous substances to mitigate risks and protect workplaces. 3PL companies specialising in DG operations are well-equipped to handle these requirements, have trained and certified personnel, and implement best practices for storage, packaging, and transportation. By partnering with a suitable specialised 3PL provider, businesses can rest assured that their DG operations are managed safely and in full compliance. 02. Range of Services and Core Competencies: Another advantage of using a 3PL provider for DG operations is their ability to offer a wide range of services. Specialist 3PL companies can handle the storage, handling, transportation, and disposal of DGs, as well as being able to provide general goods logistics services. This means businesses can rely on a single provider for end-to-end supply chain solutions, streamlining operations, reducing costs, and improving efficiency. Outsourcing logistics operations to a dedicated 3PL provider allows businesses to focus on their core competencies, leading to increased competitiveness and profitability in their area of expertise. 03. Technological Advancements: The adoption of advanced technologies is another trend expected to shape the DG logistics industry and help support its customers' needs through 2023 and beyond. 3PL companies specialising in DG operations continue to adopt advanced technologies such as Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), GPS tracking, and remote monitoring to improve visibility and control over DG shipments. This can help minimise the risk of theft, damage, or other incidents. ChemCare has invested in technology, improving real-time stock visibility, data analytics, and enhanced security, ensuring our clients’ hazardous goods are managed with precision and care. With advanced tracking tools, customers can better plan and respond quickly to any issues that may arise. Investing in the right technology helps 3PL partners provide efficient service, optimise operations, and improve overall customer service. 04. Sustainability: Sustainability is also becoming an increasingly important consideration for businesses that handle DGs. 3PL companies specialising in DG operations are likely to adopt practices that minimise the environmental impact of their operations, such as optimising transportation routes to minimise fuel consumption. This will help businesses meet their sustainability goals while also improving efficiency and reducing costs. At ChemCare, our latest warehousing facility at 259 James Fletcher Drive is a 4-star green-rated building and provides increased sustainability around electricity use, water consumption, greenhouse gas emissions and overall productivity and wellbeing. Final Thoughts: Partnering with a specialist 3PL provider like ChemCare unlocks numerous advantages for businesses handling hazardous goods, including compliance expertise, tailored logistics services, and operational efficiency. ChemCare offers a range of bespoke services, from storage and handling to transportation and disposal, and is equipped to handle the safety and compliance requirements of your DG operations. In the future, the DG logistics industry is expected to be influenced by various trends, such as a greater emphasis on safety and compliance, the growth of the chemicals and pharmaceutical sectors, the adoption of advanced technologies, and a focus on sustainability and green logistics.
